RF Signal Tracker is an engineering application designed for conducting impromptu hand-held drive tests using your Android phone. With this app, you can effectively monitor the RF and WiFi signal strength as perceived by your device, as well as WiFi hotspots. Additionally, you can describe the coverage zone of a cell site, identify changes in technology and handover points, and save and playback collected data.
The app allows you to load site locations into a database either through a CSV file or manually by long-pressing on the map. While some phone statistics can already be viewed on the device (go to Settings -> About -> Status), this app offers the advantage of mapping, recording, analyzing, and sharing that data in a more meaningful way.
Key features of the app include:
- Monitoring of data traffic bytes
- A visual XY chart displaying RF and WiFi signal strength over time
- Voice notifications for signal strength and technology changes, handovers, open hotspots, etc.
- Ability to insert notes into the collected RF data. These notes can be viewed and edited in Big Picture
- 'Drive Mode' screen showing RSSI, Cell ID, and technology while driving
- Localization for French, Spanish (thanks to Augusto!), Portuguese, and German
- Mapping and recording of color-coded RF signal strength during travel
- Wardriving capability to collect WiFi access points and list mobile location at the strongest signal
- Option for users to redefine site locations on the map
- Playback, pause, jump to any part of recorded data
- Sharing of collected data and maps via Twitter, Facebook, or other platforms
- Sector coverage zones, describing sector orientation and beamwidth
- Sound and vibration notifications for handovers
- Exporting and importing of user-defined site locations for later use
- Locating a limited number of serving cells through Google or OpenCellID
- Automatic saving of all sites located through Google or OpenCellID to a local database
- Exporting recorded data to XML, KML (Google Earth), or CSV files
- Importing older recorded data for playback
- Roaming and data state monitoring, data activity, and CGI information
- Displaying WiFi MAC address, BSSID, and supplicant state
- Identification of WiFi network access points
- EIRP/ERP and free space loss calculators
- A comprehensive view of the entire drive test or site survey in Big Picture
- Auto-shutoff at minimum battery level set by the user
- Adjustable GPS power settings
- Ability to move the app to the SD card
Please continue to provide feedback by reporting any bugs you encounter. If you experience a crash and are given the option to send a report, please do so. Alternatively, you can email your feedback directly to [email protected].
Known Issues:
- If a site appears off the coast of Africa, it means that you are using either Google's location service or OpenCellID. In such cases, the exact location of that cell cannot be determined, resulting in a default location of 0 degrees latitude and 0 degrees longitude. Version 2.2.9 introduces the ability for users to define their own site locations by selecting a spot on the map or a site icon, providing a workaround for those who do not have access to proprietary site location data.
- In the case of background recording, where the app is exited after starting a recording, signal strength changes will not be registered if the phone enters sleep mode (screen is blank). This is a limitation of the Android OS, not the app itself. However, if the phone is prevented from sleeping, background recording can be achieved.
- BER, EVDO, SNR, and Ec/Io may display as -1. This is the value sent by the Android OS, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused.
- The app is optimized for GSM service and may not fully support CDMA devices. This is because we did not have access to a CDMA phone (and contract) during development. If you have a CDMA phone, please be aware that it has not been tested by us.
- It is important to note that this app is designed for use on a phone rather than a laptop. Recording hours worth of data and/or playing it back may lead to unexpected issues.
